Vermont Route 100 - September, 27 2006
We enjoyed the trip on the Kangamangus Trail so much we decided to drive over to Vermont and travel up Vt 100 which I remembered as being a nice country drive. This time we had a beautiful sunny day and the color was a little more pronounced albeit muted. We took US 4 west to Killington and then headed north on Vt 100. This eventually reached Interstate 89 which we took home. As we went by a gas station with $2.35 gas Julie noticed that they also had a store where we could get lunch to take out. Julie sees more out the side windows than I do because I have to keep my eye on the road (somebody has to). We turned around and were pleased to find a nice, clean, and well provisioned store where we got sandwiches, chips, and sweets. Now we had to keep a look-out for a place to picnic. We were in luck. A little farther on there was a small park on the bank of the Mad River just perfect for a picnic which you will see in the following pictures.

The first stop was a sweater store just past Queechee where Julie found "just what she needed."

Shortly after Woodstock we saw a covered bridge over the Ottauqueechee river.

We continued on US 4 toward Killington which you can see in the distance.

There we turned north on Vt 100 where Julie gave me a ride.

The foliage was nice but muted on the hills by the road.

Another covered bridge built in the late 1700s over the White River.

This is where we stopped for our picnic next to the Mad River.

Julie sets up for lunch.

I'm enjoying a peaceful lunch and letting my thoughts wander.

Julie's enjoying her break from driving.

Julie spotted some of the rare native flora.

A rather large rock has washed up on the shore of the river.

A self-snapped picture of the happy wanderers.
